The day before March 15, Mercedes-Benz announced the largest car recall in history, involving 2,601,043 vehicles and 17 models, covering almost all models produced by Mercedes-Benz since 2016.

 

It is reported that the vehicles in the scope of the recall are mainly due to the design of the communication module software of the on-board E-Call system. This issue can lead to deviations in the position of the vehicle sent to the Mercedes-Benz emergency call center when the vehicle collides and automatically triggers the emergency call service, causing delays in rescue and posing a safety hazard.

E-Call is an automatic emergency rescue call system for passenger cars (M1) and light commercial vehicles (N1) launched by the European Union. It’s the third-generation automotive life safety system after seat belts and airbags. It consists of four parts: vehicle-mounted system (IVS), satellite positioning system (GPS/Glonass/Galileo), cellular communication system (GSM/WCDMA) and public safety answering point (PSAP). Its main role is that when the vehicle is involved in a traffic accident, the rescue center can obtain the relevant information at the time of the accident in the first time, and minimize casualties.

 

As of April 1, 2018, all M1 and N1 vehicles exported to EU must be integrated with an E-Call system that complies with Regulation (EU) 2015/758.

No FOTA, No Intelligence

FOTA upgrade brings a smarter car experience


Mercedes-Benz will upgrade the communication module software free of charge for vehicles covered by the recall through over-the-air (OTA) technology.


What appears to be a serious large-scale recall is a simple software upgrade, and this recall has drawn attention to OTAs. What exactly is OTA? Here, Flairmicro will explain it to you in detail.


At present, OTA in the market includes SOTA and FOTA, and FOTA technology is more advanced than SOTA.


FOTA(Firmware-over-the-air)is the action of downloading a complete firmware image for the automobile or patching existing firmware.


The advantage of automotive OTA upgrades is that it can upgrade the automotive more extensively, from the central control screen interface, operation buttons, entertainment system to the brake system and accelerator pedal strength related to driving, almost all of which can achieve OTA upgrades, so that the car can bring new surprises and a more comfortable experience to the user after each upgrade.


Taking the Tesla Model 3 as an example, its braking logic has problems, its braking distance is 46 meters when a speed of 100 kilometers per hour at the initial stage when it was time to market. After the OTA upgrade, the braking distance was shortened by 6 meters, greatly improve the safety when driving.


With the continuous improvement of vehicle electrification, intelligence and networking, FOTA remote upgrade technology will make the recall more intelligent, realize the remote firmware upgrade of the car in a short time, save the time of the vast majority of car owners to go to 4S stores, and greatly improve user experience.
