The day before March 15, Mercedes-Benz announced the largest car recall in history, involving 2,601,043 vehicles and 17 models, covering almost all models produced by Mercedes-Benz since 2016.

It is reported that the vehicles in the scope of the recall are mainly due to the design of the communication module software of the on-board E-Call system. E-Call is an automatic emergency rescue call system for passenger cars (M1) and light commercial vehicles (N1) launched by the European Union. It’s the third-generation automotive life safety system after seat belts and airbags. It consists of four parts: vehicle-mounted system (IVS), satellite positioning system (GPS/Glonass/Galileo), cellular communication system (GSM/WCDMA) and public safety answering point (PSAP). Its main role is that when the vehicle is involved in a traffic accident, the rescue center can obtain the relevant information at the time of the accident in the first time, and minimize casualties.

As of April 1, 2018, all M1 and N1 vehicles exported to EU must be integrated with an E-Call system that complies with Regulation (EU) 2015/758.

Mercedes-Benz will upgrade the communication module software free of charge for vehicles covered by the recall through over-the-air (OTA) technology.

FOTA（Firmware-over-the-air）is the action of downloading a complete firmware image for the automobile or patching existing firmware.
